The Ukulele – A traditional Hawaiian String Instrument

The ukulele, or uke, is a stringed instrument of Hawaii. This instrument has been developed in the nineteenth century Hawaii and based on a small instrument like a guitar brought to the islands by Portuguese immigrants. In particular, three carpenters are credited as the inventors of first ukelele. Portuguese immigrants have been known to play folk songs from the wharf, where native Hawaiians were impressed not only by the gentle sound of the instrument, but also nimble fingers of the players. Roughly translated, the name of the ukulele means jumping flea, a reference to the player's fingers.

Quick Increase ukulele in terms of popularity, has been credited in part to enthusiastic support of the instrument by King David Kalakaua, the last king of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Open from 1874 to 1891 he was in office when the ukuleles first played in 1879 and 1880, and soon made an integral pat of real entertainment. The popularity of this exhibition at the Expo launched a craze for Hawaiian music theme on the continent during the Jazz Age 1920.

From the 1940s until 1960 products, more than 9 million plastic ukuleles were cheap to satisfy demands Tiki aficionados. Today, the ukulele is found in many musical styles from around the world. It is especially popular in Japan.

The ukulele is an instrument known as a relatively cheap and portable, making it a favorite of amateur players from the 1920s. At the other extreme, some of most valuable ukuleles, Hawaiian koa wood prized for its tone and attractive color, can cost thousands of dollars.

A subset of the family guitar, most ukuleles have four strings. The sounds emanating from a ukulele depends on its size and how it was built. Four popular sizes there under this instrument: baritone, tenor, soprano and concert. The soprano uke the youngest, is the original size. In Hawaii, is known as the standard ukulele. Athough Ukuleles are traditional body shape of eight, as the body of an acoustic guitar, ukuleles are also oval (sometimes called form a "pineapple") pedals shaped bodies and in the squares, which are often built from a wooden cigar box.
